Interesting George Lucas Quote

This was posted today on the Star Wars Facebook page:

"The Force evolved out of various developments of character and plot…I began to distill the essence of all religions into what I thought was a basic idea common to all religions and common to primitive thinking. I wanted to develop something that was nondenominational but still had a kind of religious reality." -- George Lucas, 1979

I think this is awesome. I think it is why so man people 'got' the Force as it was presented in the original trilogy. It confuses me, then, when George suddenly tried to explain it away with midichlorians. Why?
